Starlight Casino
Gateway Casinos renovated the former Palace Casino at West Edmonton Mall into the Starlight Casino. This was a multi-phase project to upgrade and update the busiest casino in the Edmonton Area, while allowing portions of the casino to remain operational throughout construction. The lighting design is representative of the contemporary, and exciting Starlight Casino brand.
AES was added to the project team to provide coordination of various details and design execution, through collaboration with the design architect, general contractor, electrical contractor and the owner group. The work included drawing consolidation & coordination, ordering and order-management of specialty luminaires, on-site reviews for phases 1 & 2 of installation, and full lighting design in several areas. Because the as-built drawings for the existing Casino were not always accurate, AES was also required to investigate the existing site conditions and provide design solutions to meet the architectural design intent while respecting the actual site conditions. Lighting design and re-design was needed in various areas, including the front entrance lobby, front-of-house kitchens, and all elevators. Our design services included design of selected areas with full lighting calculations, renderings and visualizations, along with lighting measurements upon completion.
The showcase main entrance was completely redesigned by AES Engineering, to conform with to the existing site conditions. This is the first impression of the Casino, so the services included detailed renderings to obtain approval. The new design met the wattage limitations set-out by the existing wiring to the area, while providing sufficient illumination despite utilizing coloured and colour-changing light. This system replaced an existing lighting system while completely modernizing the entrance.
AES received a 2018 IESAB Section Award for Interior Lighting Design for the Starlight Casino project.
