Building a Stronger Kelowna: Parkinson Recreation Centre, Mission and Glenmore Activity Centres

Kelowna, BC is experiencing rapid growth, with an anticipated increase of 45,000 residents over the next 20 years. To address the evolving needs of this expanding community, the Building a Stronger Kelowna (BSK) initiative has been launched. This portfolio includes the redevelopment of the Parkinson Recreation Centre (PRC) and the creation of new Activity Centres (AC) in the Mission and Glenmore regions.

The BSK initiative aims to develop a multi-purpose, forward-thinking recreation campus and additional neighbourhood centres that will serve Kelowna’s growing population for generations, utilizing the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) method.

Parkinson Recreation Centre

The PRC, a long-standing community hub, will be redeveloped to replace the current facility, which is outdated and undersized. The new PRC will be situated on a 48-acre site, providing accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users. The campus will feature:

  • Indoor Facilities: Natatorium, gymnasium, fitness and training rooms, convertible program rooms, and administration spaces.

  • Outdoor Amenities: Sports fields, courts, plazas, playgrounds, and trails, with connections to Mill Creek, the Okanagan Rail Trail, and a future school site.

This is anticipated to be a highly sustainable and accessible facility, targeting minimum LEED Gold and Zero Carbon Building certification.

Activity Centres (AC)

Strategically planned for the Mission and Glenmore areas, these centres will complement the PRC and support local community needs.

As a part of the IPD team, AES is providing electrical engineering for the PRC, as well as ACs.
