Richie Bros.’ global headquarters is a complex campus comprised of four, three-level buildings and a glass atrium; it houses offices and a data centre. The project featured a sustainable building with Low Luminaire Power Density. All enclosed spaces have occupancy sensors, open office areas have suspended luminaires with built-in daylight sensors, and the stairwells have daylight and occupancy sensors to reduce energy usage. The project was designed to meet LEED Gold standards and was awarded the NAIOP Office Development of the Year 2009 Award, the IESBC Vision Award, and IESNA Award of Merit in 2010. AES created an energy-efficient design that suited the client’s requirements and incorporated a number of features such as daylight harvesting and occupancy controls, which helped ensure that lighting is on when occupants need it and off when daylighting is available. The data centre is backed up with a 225kVA UPS, while the building itself is backed up with a 1,250kVA generator.
