Case Study

A world-class facility designed to support Surrey’s vision, “the future lives here", the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre was designed as a community destination and aquatic facility for both recreational, therapeutic, and competitive users. The facility’s main attraction is a 10-lane, 50m FINA-standard, Olympic-size competition pool. This challenging project required balancing energy efficiency and FINA requirements while showcasing the modern architectural elements of the building. AES designed the lighting in the main lobby to be sourced from outside and the surrounding rooms. In addition, AES designed a curvature of the ceiling to its advantage by using a theatrical style of lighting. Clusters of three luminaires were featured on either side of the pool, using angled crossbeams to provide full lighting coverage without the use of direct lighting. The lighting design provides full pool coverage, is architecturally integrated, and greatly reduces typical glare for swimmers. FINA & IESNA illumination levels were achieved with this strategy while adhering to ASHRAE 90.1-2007 LPD metrics. The overall lighting design system is reactive to changes in behavior, featuring zone switching, occupancy sensors, and automated dimming controls. Lighting power density was designed to optimize energy performance under LEED Silver targets. The end result is a mindful, tranquil interior space that gives swimmers the impression they are part of the outdoors.
